Jess’s Rule
Our Commitment to Fresh Eyes
We are dedicated to patient safety and accurate, timely diagnoses. As part of this commitment, our practice fully supports Jess’s Rule, a nationwide NHS patient safety framework launched to ensure persistent health concerns are never overlooked.
This framework was established in memory of Jessica Brady, a 27-year-old who lost her life to cancer after her escalating symptoms went undiagnosed across numerous medical consultations. Jess’s Rule introduces a vital “safety net,” prompting medical teams to completely pause and re-evaluate a patient’s case if standard treatments are not working.
When Does the Rule Apply?
If you contact or visit our surgery three times regarding the exact same health issue, and you experience any of the following, it triggers an automatic reassessment:
-
- Your symptoms show no sign of improvement
- Your condition is actively worsening or escalating
- There is still no definitive or substantiated medical explanation for what you are experiencing
Our 3-Step Re-Evaluation Framework
When a case triggers Jess’s Rule, our clinical team will actively Reflect, Review, and Rethink your care plan:
-
- 1. Reflect: We look back at your previous consultations and reassess what was discussed. If your prior appointments took place over the phone or online, we will bring you in for an in-person, face-to-face physical examination. We also prioritize continuity so you do not have to keep repeating your medical history to different doctors.
- 2. Review: We consciously challenge any initial assumptions made about your condition. Our doctors will screen for critical “red flag” symptoms without letting demographic factors like a young age cloud the clinical judgment. If the diagnosis remains unclear, we will formally seek a peer review or second opinion from a colleague.
- 3. Rethink: We will pivot our approach to find answers. This includes coordinating advanced diagnostic testing, opening up alternative diagnostic pathways, or fast-tracking a referral to a hospital specialist.
